Zarnesti Canyon (Prapastiile Zarnestilor) - Trekking in Romania

Friday, December 18, 2015 Books And Trips

When you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the city, and all you want is some peace, quiet and fresh air, you can always turn to the mountains. Among Romania's most appreciated features are the Carpathians, a gorgeous mountain chain, with a variety of landscapes, vegetation and wildlife, one of the largest remaining areas of pristine forest in Europe.

Road to the Zarnesti Gorges

Forests, grasslands, gorges, canyons, subterranean caves, volcanic lakes - all these make Romania a paradise for trekking, hiking, climbing, skiing, snowboarding and all kinds of other outdoorsy activities.

For weekend away to enjoy yourself in a different scenery, check out the amazing Zarnesti Gorges, part of the Piatra Craiului National Park, a beautiful and spectacular limestone massif in the center of Romania. A starting point for this trip is the town of Zarnesti (28 km away from Brasov and circa 200 km north of Bucharest - easily accessible by car, bus or railway).

The Gorges are located about 5 km from the Zarnesti city center, and they spread out for about 3 km, offering amazing views, a good cardio workout and the possibility to practice rock climbing for the aficionados.

This deep and narrow limestone canyon was formed by the collapse of a cave roof. The gorge itself can only be explored on foot - taking anywhere from a 30 minutes stroll to a full 3 hour exploration.

Also, it is a great spot for wildlife watching - with 40-80 m high walls, it provides the opportunity to spot rare birds like Wallcreepers, Alpine swifts, Crag Martins, and also to admire impressive Jurassic geological formations.

You may also recognize these landscapes from the dramatic closing scenes of "Cold Mountain", featuring Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. It is a beautiful place to just enjoy yourself, clear your mind, breathe in the fresh air and connect with nature.

If you want to stay overnight in Zarnesti, head out to Motorom Lodge - it is a quaint little complex, offering food and accommodation, very clean and inviting, with absolutely amazing hosts and amazing views. They offer multiple activities, from rock climbing, to enduro, ATV riding, bike tours and sledding in the winter, so make sure to check them out if you want to get the most out of your weekend getaway!
